Task 3 - Comparison of film marketing research

For the first part of this unit, we are looking into how people are able to market big named films. This is in preparation for the films that we will be making; as we will be creating our own websites and trailers so that we will know more about how the pre-production and marketing stages of film work. This is important to me as I am interested in going into social media marketing.

For task 1, we had to fill out a social media audit template. This allowed me to be able to find out which types of social media benefited my chosen film (Pitch Perfect 3) and also see which ones were most effective. Pitch perfect 3's target demographic is teenage girls so to find that the movies marketing team relied heavily on social media like Twitter and Snapchat did not surprise me. This is because their demographic would usually make use of these daily. On the films official Twitter page, the team makes sure to post every single day in hopes that someone will see their tweets and follow them. If they like what they see enough they will ultimately want to see the film at some point. The film used Snapchat as a form of advertisement before the film's release into cinemas. They posted teasers and memes to increase intrigue. The audit template task also allowed me to see what social media the consumers were asking post watching the film to post their thoughts and opinions on it. I found that fans of the film would post very, very frequently on Instagram and Twitter. They post their favourite clips, memes and fan art. This also creates an advertisement for Pitch Perfect 3, as others users may see posts and think about whether they should or should not go to see the movie. Although many people would not come across these posts unless they are also fans or have enjoyed the film themselves. The last part of the template allowed me to be able to compare Pitch Perfect 3's social media to another film (The Greatest Showman). The films target demographic is also teenagers and the film is also musically based so the two films are similar in many ways. This means that a lot of the social media is used in the same way.

Task 2 was a survey that I made using google forms in order to gather data about different people's preferred social media and what they use it for. I made my google form with three simple questions and then 5 other students on my course filled it out for me.

My findings from my first question were that people use social media to connect with friends and also as a form of entertainment. This is important to know when marketing a film. Because if a films marketing team makes sure that they use the social media that people are already widely using then the advertisement will reach people.

This question highlighted to me that social media can be sabotaged by things like cyber-bullying. There are also aspects that people don't like themselves such as advertisements and news. This is down to personal opinion though. The question also made it clear that social media has a lot more advantages to offer the public rather disadvantages. It can allow you to remain in contact with many different people and see content that appeals to you personally.

This question shows that people of my age range use a lot of differnt social media for different purposes. This means that it is crucial to use social media to market a film because they are clearly used a lot. But it is also equally important to pick the right ones.
